Disease ID in the Nursery: Pathogens to Scout for This Season *
There are numerous plant pathogens that can cause unsightly leaf spots and blights on woody ornamentals and herbaceous perennials. Management of these pathogens in the nursery takes an integrated approach including cultural controls and fungicides. Scouting and accurate identification ensures the success of these control measures. This talk will cover the wilts, rots, spots, and blights recently observed at nurseries and garden centers this season. Many plant diseases can be identified while scouting, improving spray timing and reducing unnecessary pesticide applications. In the landscape, early identification ensures preventive measures can be applied keeping gardens and estates healthy and blooming. Practical management strategies include judicious fungicide application, limiting leaf wetness, and improving soil drainage.

About Charles Krasnow, PhD:
Charles Krasnow is the Extension Specialist for Greenhouse and Nursery Crops at the University of Connecticut. With a Ph.D. from Michigan State University and extensive experience in controlled environment agriculture, he collaborates closely with growers to address pest and disease challenges through research, education, and applied solutions that support Connecticut’s agricultural community.
